Rotherham United are delighted to dedicate Saturday’s game against Blackburn Rovers in support of the workers at Tata Steel.

The company recently confirmed that it was selling all of its assets, casting a shadow over thousands of steelworkers’ jobs across the UK, including those locally in Rotherham and Stocksbridge.

Despite receiving positive news that the government are willing to take 25% of the company, a buyer is still required to secure the long term future of the industry.

Rotherham United have invited workers from Rotherham to the AESSEAL New York Stadium this weekend to help maintain awareness of the situation.

“We are extremely grateful for Rotherham United for inviting us to the AESSEAL New York Stadium for the game with Blackburn,” said Chris Williamson, Branch Secretary of Community Union.

“The steel industry employs thousands of people in Rotherham and the surrounding areas, and is absolutely crucial to the local economy.

“It is a really tough time for many families, not just in South Yorkshire, but across the UK, but the support we have received from the public has provided a much needed boost.

“Today is another example of people coming together to help others in a time of need. Many of Rotherham United’s supporters will come from a family or know a family connected to this crisis in the steel industry, so the support today is not only welcome but crucial in our fight to save jobs.”

At the game with Blackburn Rovers, we ask our fans to show support as workers from Tata Steel show a banner pre-match to highlight the current situation.
