The Academy fall to an opening day defeat...

Rotherham United’s Academy slipped to an opening day defeat to Mansfield Town after a 2-1 defeat at Roundwood.

The Millers trailed at half-time but a Ross Dickinson strike squared the game up in the second half. Despite pushing on for the winner the Millers were caught on the counter attack, handing the points to Mansfield.

Academy Manager Garreth Barker thought his side deserved more from the game, but admitted he was disappointed with the team performance.

“We shouldn’t have lost the game, it is very disappointing because we put in a lot of time and effort into our pre-season campaign,” Garreth told www.themillers.co.uk

“We had a slow start as the players failed to adjust and then we conceded a goal to an individual error. We started to get into the ascendency, we played some good football and we created some good opportunities. We got the equaliser, which was nicely constructed, before having another good goal disallowed for offside.

“At this point we were in control but another error, this time positionally, cost us another goal. We had more opportunities before the end to get a point but we couldn’t capitalise from them.”

The Millers host Oldham Athletic next week at Roundwood.
