School Sport Programme

We are proud to announce we have secured funding for the School Sport Programme through the Football League Trust.

This funding would help us to spend more time to put in place effective referral mechanisms and reach more young people which in turn will aid recruitment to our Centre of Excellence.

The additional school based provision will be targeted towards communities that we currently don’t engage well with including BME young people where numbers are particularly low at our Centre of Excellence and Academy. RUCST have a history of signposting players from the BME community to the Centre of Excellence but due to us not working as closely with some of the schools in the central belt of Rotherham this has been difficult to maintain effective momentum.

Through effective targeting of schools we will be able to engage and signpost different young people from diverse communities to our Centre of Excellence utilising our staff’s cultural intermediary skills to aid facilitation.

We would also hope to be able to refer players back down the player pathway and back in to community participation both within schools and the wider established community initiatives the Trust has developed.

James Rawlinson said: “The School Sports Programme will give young people who we don’t normally engage an opportunity to participate in our sessions, it’s important to recognise that player development is not a one way process and some young people will require re-integration in to mainstream activities.”
