Rotherham United Reserves slipped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Scunthorpe United in the Final Third Development Cup.

An own goal by Bradley Peace-McDonald was added to in the second half by Hakeeb Adelakun as the Iron secured a deserved victory.

Eric Black presided over a Millers side which included the likes of Emmanuel Ledesma, Kirk Broadfoot, Jordan Bowery, Aidy White, Adam Collin and Tom Thorpe, with a smattering of young professionals and scholars making up the rest of the matchday squad.

It was almost a dream start for the hosts when they were awarded a penalty after just three minutes, but Jerry Yates hammered his spot kick wide of Joe Anyon’s right hand post.

Scunthorpe took the lead 15 minutes into game when excellent work by Kyle Wootton down the right resulted in a cross from the by-line which was turned into his own net by Peace-McDonald.

Yates continued to be denied when on 27 minutes his fierce drive was tipped over by Anyon. Bowery had a low shot which he drilled wide, and Yates again hit the target but Anyon made an easy save low down.

Anyon for a third time tipped another Yates shot over the bar before the break as the Iron held their advantage.

Scunthorpe had the majority of the chances in the second half, with Wootton’s shot well saved by Collin. The Millers stopper was called into action again with 20 minutes remaining to deny Adelakun, but he could do nothing a few minutes later as Scunthorpe doubled their advantage. A cross to the back post found its way to Adelakun who swept the ball into the net from eight yards out.

The closest the Millers came to a response was a White corner which was flicked over by Thorpe, before Yates came close again with a flashing drive wide of the far post.
