The Millers are beaten by Chesterfield...
Rotherham United were beaten by Chesterfield 4-1 in the Final Development League Cup at Staveley’s Inkersall Road.
The Millers continued their policy of giving young scholers the opportunity to face current professionals at reserve team level, with Academy manager Garreth Barker taking charge of a youthful side.
Rotherham faced an uphill battle after conceding a penalty after just four minutes following a Mason Warren challenge, and striker Mani Dieseruvwe converted from 12 yards to give the Spireites the lead.
Three minutes later former Miller Ollie Banks’ solo run into the area resulted in the second goal as he beat Laurence Bilboe from the angle. It was soon 3-0 when Dion Donohue’s cross was converted by Laurence Maguire.
Bilboe prevented further damage when he tipped another shot onto the crossbar from close range.
The closest the Millers came in the first half was an Alex Wiles corner which was headed wide by Bradley Peace-McDonald at the back post.
Chesterfield made it four just after the break when Byron Harrison found Banks and his cross was headed into the net by Dieseruvwe for his second goal.
The Millers rallied and created a number of opportunities with sub Adam Johnson heading towards goal but Aaron Chapman made the save. Chapman was called into action twice more in quick succession with Warren and Alex Wiles both denied.
Just past the hour and the Millers pulled one back when sub Alaster Redmayne surged into the area before teeing up Johnson who applied the finish.
With 10 minutes remaining Ben Wiles went close with an effort from 20 yards, and he combined with Alex Wiles late on before being denied by Chapman.
The match ended with another Ben Wiles effort as the Millers put in a much improved second half showing.
