A Football Background: Greg Halford

6 July 2015

A brief look at the Millers' latest signing's career so far...

Born in Chelmsford, the versatile Greg Halford arrives at AESSEAL New York Stadium with a wealth of experience having played in the Football League for almost the entirety of his career.

Primarily a centre half but equally adept across the back line, Halford can also operate in a number of positions further up the field.

The 30-year-old started out with Colchester United in 2001 where he graduated from the academy to make his senior debut a year later. Halford went on to be included in the 2004 League One PFA Team of the Year during his time with the U’s before departing for Reading in 2007.

A very brief stay with the Royals, who reportedly secured his services for a fee of around £2 million, saw him make just three appearances for the club before he became Sunderland’s first summer signing of 2007, costing the Black Cats £3.5 million to complete his switch to the Stadium of Light.

Successful loan spells with Charlton Athletic and Sheffield United followed which saw Wolverhampton Wanderers add him to their squad following their promotion to the Premier League. He appeared 17 times for the Molineux-club and enjoyed a loan spell with Portsmouth during that period.

His switch to the South Coast was then made permanent in 2011 and he went on to make 42 appearances at Fratton Park.

A 73 game stint with Nottingham Forest saw him return north briefly before he returned to the foot of the country during a loan spell with Brighton and Hove Albion last season in which he made 19 Sky Bet Championship appearances.
