Reserves 2 v 0 Hull City - Report

Rotherham United Reserves returned to winning ways after a 2-0 success over Hull City in the Final Third Development League.

Paul Raynor lead a strong Millers side which earned a comfortable victory with goals coming from Matt Derbyshire and sub Jerry Yates in front of the watching Steve Evans.

There was a return for Rob Milsom and Scott Loach after they completed their loan spells at Bury whilst there was also a start for Richard Wood and Frazer Richardson as they continued their rehabilitation from injury.

The Millers took a firm grip on proceedings straight away signalling their intent with two early attempts. Firstly Febian Brandy shot over from 25 yards and then captain Conor Newton headed just wide from a left wing cross.

Brandy was in the thick of the action again soon after when Derbyshire’s initial cross was cut back from the left by Skarz, but the former Manchester United winger scuffed his effort wide.

Derbyshire was next to test Hull ‘keeper Rory Watson when he expertly brought down a long pass into the channel but his shot from a tight angle was pushed away.

Before the break the Millers broke the deadlock when Richardson’s cross was headed down by Skarz for Derbyshire who turned in the area before firing past Watson.

Just after the interval the Millers doubled their advantage. Brandy lifted in a cross from the right to find Yates who netted from close range with his first touch since coming off the bench.

The Millers came close to making it 3-0 when Paul Taylor’s cross to the back post found the onrushing Newton who blazed his shot against the outside of the post.

During the closing stages Newton’s drive from 18 yards was pushed aside by Watson and Derbyshire again looked dangerous as his goalbound effort was blocked.
