Steve Evans post Ipswich Town on Millers Player...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans hailed his side’s performance after they beat Ipswich Town 2-0 at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Millers boss insisted his side played to their strengths as they overcame the high-flying Tractor Boys following goals from Matt Derbyshire and Conor Sammon.

“I think if you take it over the 95 minutes or so it’s a wonderful performance," beamed Evans after the game. "It was full of all the things that we’re good at, we were good on the ball and good in possession and there was fantastic industry from everyone in a Millers shirt, which is always more difficult against an Ipswich side, who let’s not kid ourselves, could be one up within a minute.

“I said today that it would be about endeavour and application but we’ve got enough ability to match them, but if you don’t Ipswich Town come here and turn you over.

“We took 10 or 15 minutes to settle down and we stood off them a bit and maybe we gave them a little bit too much respect. Mick McCarthy’s put a side together that’s full of real quality so you can’t really over-respect them.”

Matt Derbyshire maintained his fine form by scoring the opening goal and Evans believes he warrants all the praise he is currently receiving from the Millers’ faithful.

“The whole football club, inside and outside are delighted for him, especially the supporters," added Evans. "We’ve been patient and he deserves all the good feelings he’s rightfully receiving.

“I told the kid I was going to play him and I wasn’t going to go out and spend seven or eight hundred thousand pounds because I didn’t think people of that value were better than him. He’s deserves all that applause and the standing ovation.

“He looks bang on form. Every time he went in the box the Ipswich Town defenders had to be on their toes because he was buzzing about.

“I think my front two were fantastic today in terms of their effort and determination and when they both get a goal you have to give them the plaudits.”
