The G4S Trophy Finals

The G4S Trophy Finals held on April 25th during the Rotherham Vs Norwich match, where Herringthorpe St Marys and Thorpe Hesley Primary School went head to head.

The match was very open considering what was at stake. Both teams clearly wanted to attack and go for the win.

Thorpe Hesley broke the deadlock when Charley Gibson scored when he pounced on a loose ball and prodded the ball home from 5 yards.

St Marys then went in search of an equaliser and forced two good saves from the Thorpe Hesley goalkeeper.

Their pressure finally paid off when Declan Mullane picked up the ball on the half way line and fired in a tremendous left footed strike into the bottom corner to level the game at 1-1.

Both teams were still pressing for the winner and each had good chances to win the game with St Marys hitting the cross bar and Thorpe Hesley came close with a fantastic overhead kick.

The game ended 1-1 and it was time for sudden death penalties, Thorpe Hesley went first and Charley Gibson calmly slotted the ball home, Declan Mullane immediately repelled for St Marys.

Then the game leaned in St Marys favour when Dominic Powell stepped up for Thorpe Hesley and had his shot saved by the goalkeeper, this left Alex Brannigan with the chance to win the trophy for St Marys, he stepped up and side footed the ball into the back of the net to send the St Mary’s team and supporters in to celebration.

We want to say a massive well done to both teams for making it this far and commiserations to Thorpe Hesley as it is never easy to lose on penalties but unfortunately it happens in football.
