Rotherham United Ladies continued their excellent form at home by beating their rival for the title at 3 – 0 in a fantastic competition

The first half saw a game of end to end football, which showed a clear intent from both side to not accept defeat. Chances were at both ends with Leafield having a closer advantage. Whitley brought a good save with a goal, which was then followed by an excellent strike on the rebound that was cleared off the line by defender Birtles. Rotherham was clearly the better footballing side, however lacked their usual style of performance, leaving the score goalless at half time.

The second half saw a much better performance from the Rotherham side but should have scored as Shaw rounded the keeper and missed an open goal in the first 30 seconds.  The game continued with two further one on one from both Rabjohn and Burchill as they brought saves from the Leafield goalkeeper. Leafield had their chances by bringing a string of saves from Whitley in the Rotherham goal who so far this season has been very consistent. Rotherham’s excellent defending was helped by Birtles playing a strong role in stopping Leafield from getting through.

Rotherhham’s persistence paid off in the last 10 mintues scoring 3 goals. First from a free kick cross into Birtless, who scored a brilliant looping header to beat the keeper, which made the score 1 – 0. Leafield then pushed most forward, which allowed Rotherham to break and score on 2 counter attacks of excellent passing play.  Shaw scored the second goal from a rebound shot from Wild with a simple tap in. Burchill finished the game (after a great pass from Wild) with a one on one finish into the bottom left corner, ending the game at 3 – 0, which took Rotherham to the top of the league!

Manager comments:
"Once again we showed patience as the game seemed to be heading for a 0 - 0 draw or whoever would score first would win the game. Luckily it was us. There would have been a time we would have lost that game, which shows how much more we have come on. Desire and a reluctance to not lose is giving us a great chance this year. Long way to go but very happy with the girls and hope we can continue this as we progress".

Next home game is held at Roundwood on October 5th 2014, kick off at 2pm against the Radcliffe Olympic.

Rotherham United Development lost 5 – 0 to Beighton Magpies away.
