Becchio playing his way to fitness

Rotherham United boss Steve Evans believes the Millers faithful will have to be patient before seeing the best of striker Luciano Becchio, who made his debut in the draw with Bournemouth at the weekend.

Becchio had not featured competitively for parent club Norwich City this season, and the Millers boss believes the striker’s best performances will come as he gets up to speed with the squad.

“We said it will be two or three weeks,” Evans told Millers Player. “We said once we’ve got rid of this week’s midweek fixture we have a week without one and then it’s an international break, where it will give him a chance to be out there running and he’ll have his mini pre-season with us.

“It’s ok playing training ground games, reserve games and Under 21 but you actually get further away from that match sharpness. When we signed him we knew he’d be a couple of weeks away from full fitness.

And after making his debut at the Goldsands on Saturday, Evans insisted he will play his way into match fitness and was keen to point out the hard work that can go unnoticed.

“We’ll probably see the best of Luciano after the international break but he’ll get gametime between now and then because he worked incredibly hard for the team on Saturday doing a lot of unselfish work dropping in to make it a five man midfield and it restricted Bournemouth a lot.
