MATCH REPORT – Kilnhurst Primary 0 Maltby Lillyhall 1

After months of preparation, the first game of this year’s G4S trophy finally took centre stage at half-time during the Championship game between Rotherham and Charlton Athletic. The game saw last year’s winner Kilnhurst take to the field to face Maltby Lillyhall, who have been a part of the half-time tournament since it began at Millmoor many years ago.

As the game kicked off many people were expecting a slow cagey affair but Maltby Lillyhall’s Oliver Shannon who after receiving the pass from the kick off, fired a shot from inside his own half that caught out Josh Hamilton in the Kilnhurst goal and flew straight into the top corner to put Lillyhall 1-0 up inside the 1st minute. This shook Kilnhurst into life and the game really got going with Maltby having their backs to the wall as Kilnhurst came forward with attack after attack.

The Maltby goalkeeper and defenders stood firm and kept repelling these attacks with the woodwork coming to their rescue on a couple of occasions. Kilnhurst kept fighting until the very end but unfortunately for the defending champions they could not find the equaliser and bowed out of this year’s tournament in the first round.

We would like to say well done to both Kilnhurst and Maltby Lillyhall for the way they conducted themselves at the match and whilst on the pitch playing.
