Three Final Third Development League Cup games took place on Wednesday, with Walsall, Rotherham United and Middlesbrough all recording wins in the northern groups.

Final Third Development League Cup - North Group A

Walsall were 2-0 victors against Port Vale and Reece Flanagan was the star of the show, netting a brace.

The midfielder's first came after a poor clearance from Vale goalkeeper Harry Pickering, while his second, which wrapped up the scoring, was a fine effort from the edge of the area in the 76th minute.

Final Third Development League Cup - North Group B

A strong Rotherham United team got the better of Doncaster Rovers, 2-1, in North Group B.

Regular first-teamer Matt Derbyshire opened the scoring for the Millers, only for Lewis Ferguson to level following good work from Rovers substitute Jack McKay.

Midfielder Richard Smallwood won it for Rotherham, though, with just under 20 minutes to go, after latching onto a John Swift through-ball.

Final Third Development League Cup - North Group C

Middlesbrough made it two wins in two in North Group C by overcoming Gateshead 3-1.

After a goalless first 45 minutes, Dael Fry headed Boro in front just after the break from a pin-point Andre Bennett cross.

Substitute Jordan Jones added another but Michael Rankine pulled one back for the Heed to set up a thrilling finish.

The home side's hopes of a comeback didn't last long, however, as forward Callum Cooke found the net with a 20-yard, left-footed effort, sealing all three points for Boro.
