RUCST Launch Inter-Schools Tournament

5 June 2014

On Thursday 16th May Rotherham United Community Sports Trust ran a newly developed tournament for local schools.

The tournament was named the Spring 7’s and was run on the pitch at New York Stadium just after the first team season finished. The trust decided to run 2 tournaments, one which would feature boys from years 4 and 5 and one which would be open to secondary school girls in year 10.

Due to the first team making the League 1 play offs we were only told we had access to the pitch 5 days before the tournament so it was a massive achievement to recruit 12 teams.

The tournaments were both run on a mini league basis with the top 2 teams from each league moving onto the semi-final, after some hard fought games the boys final saw both teams from Herringthorpe St Mary’s battle it out to be the winners, with Rawmarsh and Aston making it through to the girls final, where Aston proved just the better team and won the inaugural Spring 7’s Trophy.

After the success of this tournament we are hoping that it will become a regular fixture in the schools sporting calendar.

6 youngsters who took part in the tournament were invited to the RUFC academy to train for a few weeks with the view to a permanent signing.

Rotherham United WGFC are now recruiting for under 12’s, under 14’s, under 15’s and under 16’s, please click on the following link for more information:
