Championship experience key in Sadler capture, Raynor

17 June 2014

Assistant Manager pleased with capture...

Paul Raynor believes latest capture Mat Sadler will prove a ‘valuable addition’ to the squad after he agreed a deal to sign for Rotherham United today, subject to Football League clearance.

Sadler is no stranger to the second tier and it’s this experience that Raynor believes will be welcome amongst the Millers squad.

“He’s a good player with bags of experience,” Raynor told Millers Player. “He’s played for some good clubs like Birmingham City and Watford and brings with him significant Championship experience and Premier League as well so we believe he’ll be a valuable addition.”

The former Blues and Hornets man is a left-back by trade and will compete with current occupier Joe Skarz to make that position his own, competition in the squad that Raynor expects will bring the best out of the pair.

“It’s a position we felt we needed to strengthen, he’ll put significant pressure on Joe Skarz so we now have two top quality players at left-back and we’ll let them fight it out to see who gets the shirt in that first game, and whoever it is will be playing well to keep the other out of the side.”

Sadler became signing number six of the summer, and like a number of those who agreed deals before him, it’s that experience at Championship level that has been sought by the Millers’ management.

“We’ve made a conscious effort to bring players in who have Championship experience such as Matt Derbyshire, Scott Loach and Kirk Broadfoot, and now Mat adds to that list as well. We know it’s a big step and we’ve got a very talented squad who are used to winning football matches but we’re not silly, we know we’ve got to add quality to that nucleus and that’s why we’ve brought in some lads who know what the level is all about because they’ve been there and done it.”

It isn’t the end of the business however indicates Raynor who insists that the club are still working on further deals to strengthen elsewhere.

“There’s plenty still bubbling at the moment, and the Manager is working hard on a number of deals that are still in the process and hopefully we can announce more in the next week or so. We’re pleased to get Mat over the line though because he intimated as soon as there was interest that he would like to come and they’re the sort of players we want around.”
