Patience pays off for Steve Evans

23 January 2014

Rotherham United have signed Middlesbrough midfielder Richie Smallwood on loan.

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans admitted that patience was key to him landing Middlesbrough midfielder Richie Smallwood.

Evans moved to bolster his midfield by signing the 23-year-old who has featured 13 times at Championship level for Middlesbrough this season.

Clearly delighted with his latest addition, Evans admitted his surprise at being able to land the Redcar-born player.

“It goes without saying that I am delighted to sign such a talented young midfielder,” Evans told www.themillers.co.uk

“I have watched Richie develop over the last couple of seasons and I must admit that I was surprised to learn that he may be available. He adds significantly to the talented midfielders we already have. I had a couple of other options but I remained patient and I kept believing if the player wanted to go out on loan then Rotherham United would be his choice.

“Our squad has taken a nice shape in the last two weeks; we as team Rotherham are significantly stronger for the changes made. Richie will have good competition for a place but having spoken to him he is well aware of that."

Smallwood joins fellow January signings Tom Hitchcock, Wes Thomas and Blair Turgott at the club training ground today, and Evans revealed that he is still keeping an eye out for players with a week remaining until the transfer window slams shut.

“We are not quite finished on assembling our squad for the completion to the season, we have a couple of other offers out at other clubs and we will see where they are at in the next few days,” he added.

“The lads are buzzing and we are all looking forward to the challenges in front of us, none of this is a sprint, as always it is more like a marathon.”
