Young side draw ahead of Youth Cup...

Rotherham United stretched their unbeaten run to four games with a 2-2 draw at Grimsby Town.

Due to this evening’s FA Youth Cup tie at New York Stadium (7pm), managerial duo Garreth Barker and Mike Sheron fielded an extremely young time with a number of schoolboys starting the game.

“We decided to use it as an Under 17s fixture really, featuring a lot of our first years and our Under 16s,” Sheron told www.themillers.co.uk. “We were delighted with the outcome and the performance and although we conceded a goal in the dying minutes there were some outstanding players and plenty of positives to take from it.”

After going behind early in the second period, the youthful Millers hit back within a minute thanks to a delightful goal by first year scholas Alex Wiles.

“He got it on the far right of the box and hit it across to score a great goal, it will be a contender for Goal of the Month. We were back to 1-1 within a minute thanks to Wilesy’s goal, then got a penalty in the last 10 minutes. We hit the post twice and it was generally one of our best performances of the season.

“They showed good character, great resolve, but most of all plenty of quality for a very good performance. They (Grimsby) scored two goals from corners which was to be expected with the size difference but we competed very well and we came away smiling despite conceding late.

“We’ve plenty of selection dilemmas ahead of next week and the two outstanding players were Max Hallatt and Jerry Yates.”

Don’t forget, the Millers are in action at New York Stadium tonight, and full details of how you can support the lads are available here.

Millers: Wickstone, Shelley, Bailey (Wiles 51), Hallatt, Potts, Jay, Gibson (Guest HT), Fenton, Yates, Wiles (Gray 10), Norfolk.
