Rawmarsh Community School’s U13 girls team to a huge step closer to realising their dream of playing at Wembley...
Rawmarsh Community School’s U13 girls team to a huge step closer to realising their dream of playing at Wembley by winning the local round of the Football League Trusts U13 girls 6 aside tournament organised by Rotherham United Community Sports Trust. The tournament took place on Tuesday 19th November at Wickersley School and Sports College 8 secondary schools from across the borough sent teams to the local round. The day was set up so that all the teams played each other in a league format and at the end of all the league fixtures Rawmarsh Community School and Brinsworth Comprehensive both topped the league with 15 points, this meant the two teams progressed to the final.
It was obvious that the two teams were as evenly matched as the league form suggested when the first 12 minutes of football ended goal less and the match went into three minutes of extra time, still neither team could break the deadlock and the match went to penalties.
The teams selected their three penalty takers and the each stepped up to take their attempts, the first four penalties were all taken well and scored it was starting to look like the teams were headed for a long shoot out when the Rawmarsh goal keeper pulled off a great save from the third and final Brinsworth penalty, this left rawmarsh with a golden chance to win it, unfortunately they hit the post and the shoot out went into sudden death. The Rawmarsh goalkeeper again pulled off a save and gave her team the chance to win it and this time they made no mistake scoring their kick and ending the shoot out.
So commiserations to Brinsworth, penalties are always a harsh way to lose a match but they played well throughout the day and as a newly formed side I am sure they will make the most of this experience. Their manager and teacher Miss Grimes said “we only put the team together two weeks ago so winning one match was our target but to get to the final and come so close is absolutely amazing for us and we hope to continue the development of the team on the back of this. I would also like to thank Rotherham United for putting on events like this as without it we would never have put together this team and the girls wouldn’t have realised how much they enjoy football.”
We would also like to congratulate Rawmarsh Community School as they were a great team throughout the day and the way the girls played and behaved was a credit to their school. They will now go on to represent Rotherham United in Derby at the area finals in the New Year. They will play against all the other local winners from our region and if they are successful will be one round away from playing at Wembley before the league 1 play-off final on the 30th March 2014. So we wish them good luck and we will be supporting them hopefully all the way to Wembley.
We would finally like to thank all the schools for their attendance on the day as every game was played In the right spirit and all the girls had a great day, special thanks also go to Wickersley School and Sports College in particular Lindsay Thackery who agreed to host the tournament at very short notice and ensured we had everything we needed throughout the day.
