Millers defender ready to get started...

Rotherham United’s Joe Skarz is back in training with his teammates this week, and is already looking to hit the ground running after cementing a permanent move to New York Stadium over the summer.

“I can’t wait for the season to start now,” said Joe. “The first few days are hard as you expect, but once the first two weeks are out of the way and the games start then it becomes a little easier and we can start focusing on the game at Crewe and getting a good start.”

There are several new faces at Roundwood currently, with Steve Evans recruiting five more new players for the assault on League One, with one in particular having cited Joe’s glowing reference as a reason he joined the side.

“The new lads seem to be settling really well. It’s a good bunch of lads here who helped me to settle in last year so I don’t see any problems for them. David (Worral) gave me a call to ask me what the club was like, and I only had good words to say about it having made my move permanent a week before. He asked what the training ground was like and he seemed to know how good the stadium was so it is a good move for him as well as the team and I’m sure he’ll benefit us by adding to what we’ve already got."

Before joining the Millers last season, Joe was with Kevin Blackwell’s Bury who were eventually relegated to Football League Two, following a long-running financial struggle, but after reclaiming League One status, Joe is looking very much towards the top end of the table.

“If we can get a good start then I see no reason we can’t be looking at the top end of the table. We’ve got some momentum from last season and we’ll be looking to pick up some wins in August and carry it on.”
