Raynor relishing season start

19 June 2013

Assistant Manager expects big travelling support...

Rotherham United will kick off the season with a trip to Crewe Alexandra before hosting Preston North End in the first League One game at New York Stadium.

The fixtures for the 2013/14 campaign were released just hours ago, and Millers Assistant Manager Paul Raynor is already looking forward to the start of the season.

“We’d all like it to be a home, that’s a given but it’s not to be and luckily for us it’s not far away so the supporters will travel in great numbers and I’m sure they’ll all be in good voice. Looking at the first month, there are some tough games but we knew all along that would be the nature of this division when we got promoted.

“We’ve been talking about the big names and the quality of the opposition and now we have to get ready to face these teams. It’s all hypothetical at the minute though and we just have to focus on that first game at Crewe.”

Following the Preston game, the Millers travel to Crawley Town, the former club of the Millers’ management team, adding an extra spark to the August fixtures.

“You always look for the teams you’ve played for and coached at, which for me is quite a lot, but I spent a lot of time at Preston which I enjoyed, and then had five good successful years at Crawley so they were a couple I immediately looked for. You then look at Christmas time and the last day like everybody else.”

Whilst more extensive planning and targets will come into place later in the campaign, for now the focus is on the Millers getting off to a good start at the Alexandra Stadium.

“The gaffer likes to put fixtures in blocks, and put points tallies in, but that comes after the start of the season once you land in a position in the table, but for now the focus is the first couple of games, getting our scouting system prepared and being ready for pre-season and the opening day at Crewe.”
