Supporting Circle of Hope event

The RUCST is proud to announce that it will be supporting the Circle of Hope launch event on 29th June, which supports the British Heart Foundation.

The Trust has offered its support by holding its own football tournament in the Rotherham Town Centre at 10:30 am.

The Circle of Hope encourages people to take part in a heart healthy physical activity, with a wide range of activities offered at multiple sites across Rotherham, and free entry to every event.  The family fun day is organised by the Rotherham Heart Town partnership with support from local BHF volunteers, Rotherham Metropolitan Council, DC Leisure and Rotherham United Community Sports Trust.

The flagship event will be a mass participation walk and fun run through the town centre, kicking off at 11am and open to one and all, families, friends and teams including wheelchair users with assistance.   At 1pm the town centre will be converted to a school playground, with traditional activities including football (keepy-uppy), a skipathon, hoola hoops and hopscotch.

For serious athletes, there will be the chance to recreate the 4 minute mile in Clifton Park at 9am, enter a 1k swimathon at Rotherham Leisure Centre at 3pm, or join in a 5k or 10k bike challenge throughout the day at the leisure centres at Aston, Wath, Maltby or Rotherham.  Participants can choose one activity or take on the triathlon.

Organisers hope the event will encourage the people of Rotherham to take part in heart healthy activities and to think about their own heart health while raising sponsorship to help the BHF fight for every heartbeat.

Heart disease is the UK’s single biggest killer. For over 50 years the British Heart Foundation (BHF) has pioneered research that’s transformed the lives of people living with heart and circulatory conditions. But so many people still need help.

Cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Ken Wyatt said “As Chair of the Heart Town Partnership, I am proud to support the Circle of Hope.  So many people in Rotherham are touched by the devastating effects of heart disease.  You can be part of our fight to improve the town’s heart health and improve your own when you register to take part in the Circle of Hope.”

June Thomas, Chair of the Rotherham Heart Town fundraising branch added, “Join in this fun packed day and show everyone our town’s full of heart.  This is a great way to have fun, get fit and save lives.  Everything is free to take part in and all we ask is that you register early and try to raise as much sponsorship as possible.  There will be goodies for all and additional prizes for those who raise a minimum amount of sponsorship, plus live music and entertainment throughout the main town centre events.”

Everyone who takes part will receive a free wrist band and entry to the BHF’s Heart Matters membership service for free support and regular issues of heart matters magazine.  Every pound raised will go to the BHF’s Mending Broken Hearts Appeal to help make a difference to people’s lives.

Organisers are also calling on town centre shops, businesses, schools, colleges and residents across Rotherham to enter teams in the organised events or plan their own event to widen the Circle of Hope.

Rotherham became one of only 50 BHF Heart Towns in the UK in January 2012 and the Circle of Hope is the major annual public event in the town to raise funds for the nation’s heart charity and to raise awareness about heart health.
