Over 60 pupils from Wales, Winterhill and Clifton schools attended Rotherham United Community Sports Trusts annual Show Racism the Red Card Conference

Over 60 pupils from Wales, Winterhill and Clifton schools attended Rotherham United Community Sports Trusts annual Show Racism the Red Card Conference. The Year 8 and 9 pupils were put through their paces in a full day conference which involved interactive workshops followed by a screening of this year’s Show Racism the Red Card promotional DVD.

To top things off those in attendance had the opportunity to pose questions to a panel made up of the Millers very own Dale Tonge, Andy Warrington and Lionel Ainsworth. The Trust were also proud to have Councillor Jahangir Akhtar (Deputy Leader of Rotherham Council) and Councillor Mahroof Hussain (Cabinet Member for Community Development, Equality and Young People’s issues) on hand at the event to provide their expert opinion on the topic of the day.

The morning session started off with a workshop led by ex Newcastle United favourite Olivier Bernard who discussed the way negative stereotypes influence behaviour within football and in wider society. A second workshop led by the Millers Trusts Cohesion team looked at the different skills that young people can acquire to resist racism and to develop and share our own identities.

The afternoon saw a number of awards given out for the best questions during the panel session along with a full stadium tour being thrown in as part of the action packed event. Mark Cummins Cohesion Officer at the Trust commented “the event is one of the highlights of our year and it is always a pleasure to host the Show Racism the Red Card Conference, I can honestly say that this year’s cohort of young people were the best yet and some of the questions and themes discussed during the day were done so in a mature and thoughtful manner something that all pupils and the schools they represented can be extremely proud of, as ever it is about continuing to spread the message and here at the Trust we will continue to do that 12 months of the year”
