Gaffer pleased with Portugal trip

19 July 2012

Rotherham United boss believes the Algarve training camp has been a success, with five tough days training and a victory over Oldham Athletic setting the side up for a busy 10 days ahead.

Evans, speaking exclusively to www.themillers.co.uk this morning, mentioned the success of the pre-season training camp in the Algarve, and his newly assembled squad.

Fresh from yesterday's convincing 3-1 victory over Npower League One side Oldham Athletic, the Millers boss spoke about the success of the trip. “This is a new squad that has been put together from old and new players but I can tell already it will prove to be a successful team, we are looking good,” said Evans.

''In the main all the ingredients are there. Perhaps a couple of additions are required but I am delighted with what we have. The ability is there and yesterday showed that the desire and commitment to win was in the camp, which is the most important ingredient of all.

''Let me remind all my players the only thing that can separate teams who all put in the equal amount of effort, is to have a great desire and are organised is ability.

''The lads have worked as hard as any team I have ever managed in the first couple of weeks but as I reminded them yesterday that needs to be for the full duration whilst they are at Rotherham United. We have some really talented players but again they must earn the right to let their ability shine.”

The Millers are back in pre-season action on Saturday when Championship Barnsley arrive for the inaugural game at the New York Stadium, and the challenges don’t stop there, with SPL and League One opposition to come.

''We have a tough two weeks ahead of us now when you consider the quality of opposition we will face. Barnsley, Doncaster Rovers, Hearts and Sheffield United will test us both physically and from a football perspective but they are matches in which we will all learn about ourselves ahead of the new season.

''The lads will train today before we head back to Rotherham. We are all looking forward to Saturday and playing our football in the New York Stadium. In football you very seldom get to do things that are history making but on Saturday we all will by being at the Barnsley match.

''The New York Stadium will be in place for hundreds of years and I am so proud that I will be the manager who is in charge of Rotherham United on Saturday. The Chairman will no doubt shed a tear and I hope I can help him get the success he deserves.

''Our supporters have suffered over recent times but on Saturday we are back home and the future begins. I am proud to be a miller and I will give this job everything I have inside me to give you all the team you deserve. Together we can deliver the dreams and by being together we can enjoy the ride, one we are all very much looking forward to - roll on Saturday''.
