FUTSAL DEVELOPMENT SQUAD PLAY FIRST FRIENDLY AGAINST SHEFFIELD UNITED

Rotherham United 17 Sheffield United 2

As part of the Rotherham United Education Academy at the Community Sports Trust, the NEW Futsal Development Squad played their first friendly on Saturday 4th August at the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield.  This was the first time that the ever growing squad had played together beating the Sheffield United Futsal Development Squad convincingly 17-2!

In front of an excited crowd of both young and old fans the Rotherham United players showed why they had been chosen to play with a mix of fantastic game play and skills. These were matched at times by the Sheffield Squad keeping the game competitive and fun to watch but the result was inevitable by the first half. Both teams played extremely well to say that they had never played together before proving that there is a great potential and future for Futsal in South Yorkshire.

Chris Kirby who is coaching Rotherham United said “it was a great opportunity to be involved in the Shefftival event here at the English Institute for Sport and the lads really took it on board. To say that they have never played together before in a competitive sense together is very promising. I am excited about the future and I can t wait for the league to start next month!”

The squad will be starting full time in September and will not only train as a squad; they will also get to play friendly and competitive matches in Futsal and 11 a side. Futsal is a fast paced game which takes lots of skill and control with an element of skill and technique required making it a very popular sport Worldwide. The squad will be taking part in a new scholarship program designed to replicate being a professional player including a training regime, home and away matches, diet and nutrition advice and the chance to gain a Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport.

Mark Wilkinson who is the Education Officer says “this is a great chance for young players to be involved in this fantastic sport whilst gaining knowledge around how to be in a professional player. It also gives the young player a great opportunity to develop their knowledge and opportunities for the future with a qualification that can progress them onto Higher Education after the two year scholarship”
