REPORT | Notts County 0 v 1 Academy

22 January 2018

Rotherham United picked up their first win of 2018 after a narrow 1-0 victory away at Notts County.

The Millers, who have only been involved in cup action since the turn of the year, put in a solid display to maintain their unbeaten run in the league after skipper Lewis Murr converted a penalty in difficult conditions.

Academy Manager Garreth Barker said:

“We had a difficult away game at Notts County, where they had told us the pitch was going to be heavy.

“It was a different game of football because of those pitch conditions. Credit must go to the boys because they tried to play as much football as the pitch would allow them, particularly in the first half.

“I think for both teams it was very difficult in the second half. You had full backs trying to press wide players who were just falling over and people trying to turn but just skating beyond opponents.

“The way the game was going, it always looked like it was going to be an error that would prove the difference. We got a penalty which Lewis took, so that put us one up.

“We held on at the end and Notts County hit the upright with around five minutes to go. Their substitute came in on his left hand side and he curled one against the post with a great effort.

“Overall, it was another good performance and a different performance on a pitch which one or two may have to play when out on loan in their careers.”
