REPORT | Academy 1 v 0 Burton

18 December 2017

Rotherham United Lead Professional Development Phase Coach Ciaran Toner hailed the patient approach taken by the club’s youngsters which saw them finish the year unbeaten with a late goal earning them a 1-0 win over Burton Albion.

The Academy had to bide their time in the game against the Brewers, who held out until five minutes from time, before Jack Obsorne ensured the Millers were rewarded for their persistence with his winner.

Toner has understandably been delighted by the performances of the Under 18s who remain unbeaten in the Youth Alliance League in 2017/18 but placed on record extra praise for their disciplined display in the win over Burton.

“For us to stay patient and professional in our approach showed our composure and I think we got our just rewards with a late goal,” he said.

“It was great for them to see how that game unfolds from minute 1 to 90 and how you have to put in a lot of groundwork without goals before going on to win the game.

“Looking at the game objectively, we've got to be pleased with the way the lads have performed and come away with a 1-0. I think psychologically they really stood up to that and it was great to see their efforts rewarded in the end.”
