REPORT | Doncaster 1 v 1 Reserves

15 January 2019

Rotherham United continued their impressive Central League form with a point on their travels against Doncaster Rovers.

The Millers came from behind at Cantley Park in a competitive showdown after Tyrone Lewthwaite levelled just before the interval.

Ciaran Toner presided over a Millers side that was predominantly made up of first and second year academy scholars. The experience was provided by winger Alex Bray, who has just returned from a loan spell at York, and Jerry Yates who appeared for the first team at Ipswich after recently returning from Carlisle.

The home side, who were also fielding a youthful lineup, made the early running with Millers stopper Laurence Bilboe happy to see a misdirected cross come back off the bar in the early stages.

Bilboe was involved again soon after but this time his 50 yard pass picked out Bray who advanced into the area, but his low cross was cleared by the Doncaster defence.

Doncaster took the lead on 21 minutes when the left winger drilled in a low strike which beat Bilboe low into the bottom corner.

After another low stop from Bilboe, the Millers threatened again when Bray showed great composure to work a shooting opportunity, but his firmly hit 20 yarder was pushed away by the ‘keeper.

Just before the break the Millers levelled. Bray was the architect again as he turned in a low cross from the left which Lewthwaite flicked into the bottom corner.

It was a more sedate second half with few chances but Bilboe sprung into action with another low save with his legs from close range.

With 13 minutes remaining a mazy run by Lewthwaite ended with a pass to sub Robbie Gateskill, who drilled in a cross which was sliced just over by a Rovers defender.

Doncaster piled on the pressure late on but a combination of Bilboe and the crossbar earned the Millers a point.

Rotherham: Bilboe; Beeden, Southern-Cooper, Hull, Hinds; Bray, Peel-Evans, Carlton, Gratton; Lewthwaite, Yates.
