The Millers draw at Doncaster...

Rotherham United Reserves were pegged back from what would have been a deserved victory following a 1-1 draw against Doncaster Rovers at Cantley Park.

The Millers took the lead through striker Joshua Kayode but a late strike from Danny Amos secured a draw for the hosts.

Rotherham carved out the better openings, with Kayode hitting the bar and post late on, but didn’t have it all their own way with ‘keeper Laurence Bilboe pulling off several high class saves.

In snowy and bitterly cold conditions, it was the Millers that warmed to the task. With a squad mixed with senior professionals, including Ben Purrington, and Academy scholars, Matt Hamshaw’s side settled quickly.

Home ‘keeper Marko Morosi was called into action early on when he beat away Mason Warren’s quick-fire strike from just inside the area.

Kayode also went close when he challenged the ‘keeper from Ben Wiles’ teasing cross, only to be foiled by the referee’s whistle.

At the other end Will Longbottom’s looping header cannoned off the top of the bar, whilst Alfie May fired well over when well placed inside the area.

Just past the half-hour mark, the Millers took a deserved lead. The dangerous Reece McGinley whipped in a cross from the left, and Kayode rose to glance beyond Morosi.

Bilboe was called into action just before the break when he stopped another fizzing strike from May, but it was the Millers who took a lead into half-time.

The arctic blast continued into the second half but the Millers were again on the front foot when Kuda Muskwe fired over with a well-hit strike from 25 yards.

There was another opportunity created when Wiles’ clever free-kick freed Purrington who fizzed a low cross through the six yard area but found no touch.

Two brilliant successive saves from Bilboe preserved the Millers’ advantage, but from the resulting corner Amos drilled a shot into a dangerous area with May claiming a touch as it flew into the corner.

The Millers should have won the game late on when Kayode was unfortunate when he lifted an effort over Morosi only to see the ball strike the inside of the post. Then inside the final 10 minutes sub Ravernelle James crossed into the six-yard area where Kayode crashed an effort against the crossbar.

TEAM | Bilboe; Atherton, Southern-Cooper, Hinds, Purrington; Maguire (James 74), Warren, Wiles, McGinley, Kayode, Muskwe.

SUBS | McMahon, Murr, Osborne, Martin.
