REPORT | Reserves 3 v 2 Morecambe

12 April 2018

Rotherham United Reserves returned to winning ways in the Central League after defeating Morecambe 3-2 at Roundwood.

Goals from Kuda Muskwe, Jack Osborne and Tom Maguire sealed the points for the Millers after coming back from 0-2 down, and there was further good news as midfielder Darren Potter made his long awaited return from injury.

Potter was the most senior representative in a young side, with the ex-Liverpool playmaker enjoying 60 minutes before being replaced by Sam Martin.

Rotherham had the first effort in the opening exchanges as Muskwe tested Morecambe stopper Maher with a long range effort, and the same player went close again after being fed by Potter but he dragged his effort wide.

There was then a concern for Laurence Bilboe after he bravely halted a Morecambe chance, and whilst the stretcher wasn’t required, he was unable to continue with George McMahon going in goal.

Maguire and Joshua Kayode were both denied before the interval whilst McMahon himself was also called into action to deny Hawley.

Just after the break the visitors opened the scoring through Carlos Mendez-Gomes who tapped in from close range, and just before the hour they doubled the advantage when Lamin Jagne combined with Mendez-Gomes who then fired into the bottom corner.

The Millers quickly got one back when Maguire’s corner was headed in by Muskwe to reduce the deficit, and the same player was superbly denied by Maher when he looked certain to equalise.

With 15 minutes remaining the Millers did equalise after a superb move involving Maguire and Muskwe, with the latter setting up Osborne who fired home with a stunning strike from 25 yards.

The comeback was completed with eight minutes remaining as Mason Warren’s incisive pass was collected by Maguire who fired in the winner.

ROTHERHAM | Bilboe (McMahon 21); Osborne, Southern-Cooper, Atherton, Hinds (Johnson 80); Wiles, Warren, Potter (Martin 60), Maguire; Kayode (Hutchinson 69), Muskwe.
