Rotherham United's unbeaten start to the totesport East League came to an end after a 2-0 home defeat by Scunthorpe United.

Goals by Peter Winn and Jonathan Forte were enough to see off a strong Millers side which included the likes of Ryan Taylor, Mark Burchill and Mark Hudson.

The Millers started brightly and registered their first effort on target after two minutes when Omar Garcia's strike from 20 yards went straight at Josh Lillis. Mark Burchill had the next chance after five minutes when he was sent clear on goal, he took the ball around Lillis but his effort was cleared off the line by Jake Picton. Scunthorpe responded well to the Millers early pressure and came within a whisker of taking the lead after eight minutes when Ian Morris rattled the bar from 20 yards. Moments later Winn scrambled clear on goal but after beating Steven Cann his shot was deflected wide by David Haggerty.

On 25 minutes the Millers missed a glorious chance when Hudson made a great run down the right, he then crossed low to the far post but Taylor's low drive was saved by Lillis. Rotherham were made to rue the miss when just seconds later Winn latched onto a difficult bouncing ball beating Marc Joseph before slotting the ball past Cann and into the net.

Burchill looked lively in attack and three minutes before half time his neat lay-off found Andy Todd, he crossed deep to the back post but Taylor headed well over under pressure from the Iron defence.

Rotherham made the first opportunity of the second half when Burchill laid the ball into the path of Marc Newsham who fired over from the edge of the area. The Millers continued to attack and soon after a Jamie Green cross found its way to Jamie Yates but his curling effort smacked off the crossbar. Despite Rotherham's positive start it was the Iron who were next to find the net in the 49th minute. Forte mesmerised the Millers defence with a tricky run into the box, which he finished with a bullet shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.

Rotherham struggled to get back into the game and were restricted to half chances by a resolute Iron defence. On 70 minutes Garcia darted into the area but dragged his shot wide from an acute angle. The game finished with little further incident as the Millers relinquished their unbeaten start to the reserve league season.
