Local lad Cresswell was a summer acquisition for the Millers in 2010, joining from Bury on a three-year deal.
Ryan is a powerful central defender whose ariel prowess has occasionally led to him being utilised as a striker.
He started his career at Sheffield United and enjoyed loan spells at Halifax, Morecambe, Macclesfield and the Millers before a permanent move to Gigg Lane in July 2008.
He featured regularly in the heart of the Shakers' defence, making over 50 appearances alongside experienced pair Efe Sodje and Ben Futcher, before moving back to Rotherham last summer.
He was immediately installed as captain and lead by example with some sterling performances which saw him on the scoresheet against Lincoln, Cheltenham, Burton, Accrington and Huddersfield.
A broken collarbone derailed his progress after Christmas but he returned to the side at the back end of last season, making 26 appearances in total.
