The Lowdown on... Accrington Stanley

Posted on: Mon 15 Mar 2010

Rotherham got back to winning ways on Saturday with a vital 1-0 away win against fellow play-off hopefuls, Dagenham & Redbridge.

Reflecting on this vital away win, Manager Ronnie Moore was pleased with his side getting back to winning ways;

"It was a fantastic team performance, we passed the ball well and looked a lot tighter in defence.

"It was a massive win, but there's a long way to go. If we keep performing like we did today then the glass will be full."

The Millers will next face an away trip to The Fraser Eagle Stadium to face mid-tabled, Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night.

Accrington will also come into this game on the back of an away victory against Barnet. Stanley won 2-1, which puts them in 12th place in League Two on 50 points.

Stanley have been in typical mid-table form all season, but are now five points from the play-off places and nine points behind the Millers.

Accrington have recently signed Everton defender James McCarten on a short-term loan deal. The young defender was on the bench for Stanley's win over Barnet at the weekend.

Ronnie Moore could give a debut to on loan Reading winger, Abdulai Bell-Baggie, after signing the youngster on an emergency one month loan last week.

Rotherham also secured the loan signing of Exeter City striker Craig McAllister, who deputised for the Millers on Saturday and was heavily involved in creating Le Fondre's second half strike.

Manager Ronnie Moore heaped praise on the loan striker after an impressive debut against the Daggers;

"You can tell he (McAllister) hasn't played a lot of games, but he's clever, he holds the ball up well and has already had a good link up with Alfie (Le Fondre)"

Rotherham recorded a 1-0 win over Stanley in the first game of the season, Paul Warne coming off the bench to secure the win for The Millers.

Last season, The Millers were unbeaten against Stanley. They won 3-1 at The Fraser Eagle Stadium, with two goals from Mark Burchill and substitute Drewe Broughton adding the third. The teams then played out a 0-0 draw in the return fixture at Don Valley.

The last time Stanley beat Rotherham was in the 2007/2008 season where they recorded a 1-0 win against The Millers at Millmoor in League Two. However, the form book seems to favour The Millers heading into this game, as Rotherham have been victorious in four out of the last six games between the two teams since 2005.

One to look out for will be former Rotherham midfielder, John Mullin, who scored 12 goals in 180 appearances for The Millers. He is currently pushing for a starting place in John Coleman's team after recovering from injury.

One of the men keeping Mullin out of the team is Stanley's top scorer this season, Robert Grant, who has netted an impressive 12 goals from midfield so far this season.

Accrington can go six points behind The Millers with a win on Saturday and sneak up the table as they aim to push for a play-off place. Rotherham however, will be looking to edge back into the automatic promotion places with a win at The Fraser Eagle Stadium.
