The Lowdown on... Dagenham & Redbridge

Posted on: Mon 08 Feb 2010

On Tuesday night Rotherham United play host to Dagenham & Redbridge at Don Valley Stadium.

Rotherham come into the game after back to back defeats to bottom club Darlington. Reflecting on the 2-0 defeat at The Darlington Arena on Saturday, manager Ronnie Moore said:

"It was embarrassing. We've got to get back to basics and start defending from the front. It's the simple things that we're not doing."

"We now move on and look forward to the challenge on Tuesday night to turn it around."

Rotherham slipped to 5th place in League Two after this defeat and are now six points behind Bury in third.

Dagenham come into this game after a 1-0 home defeat to Northampton on Saturday.

This leaves John Still's men in 10th position in League Two, just five points behind The Millers.

However, The Daggers have been in good form in the league this season after a huge recruitment drive in 2009. John Still has brought in over 20 players during the course of this season.

Dagenham have recently signed right back Romain Vincelot from French club Chamois Niortais and Damien McCrory from Plymouth Argyle to bolster John Still's defence.

They have won eleven games overall this season and have proved difficult to beat on the road, losing just four games and winning three. The Daggers have started the season extremely well and are exceeding all expectations, as their league position suggests.

Dagenham striker Paul Benson was The Daggers' top scorer last season, netting 17 in the league. He has already reached an impressive 12 already this season, and his scoring chances have been increased by the acquisition of Darren Currie. The nephew of Sheffield United legend Tony Currie joined The Daggers on loan from The Millers' local rivals Chesterfield and has a reputation as a tireless, tricky winger on the right hand side of midfield.

The Daggers have proved to be tough opponents in the past few seasons for Rotherham. Last season it finished all level in both games as The Millers drew 1-1 at Dagenham in September and it also finished 1-1 at Don Valley in January. Only an Ian Sharps late equaliser preventing The Daggers from taking all three points away with them.

Rotherham last beat Dagenham & Redbridge at Millmoor in the 2007/2008 season, when they edged a 2-1 win thanks to Danny Harrison's winner in the first half.

Dagenham & Redbridge have failed to beat Rotherham in recent years and will be hungry to rectify this. A win for The Daggers will edge them up the table as they look to get their play-off push back on track. However, Rotherham will look to make up for back to back league defeats and get back to winning ways at Don Valley on Tuesday night.
