Millers defender put's claim to opening goal
Rotherham United defender Nick Fenton cleared up any confusion regarding the Millers opener last night by stating that the goal was unquestionably his.
Fenton drove in a powerful shot that bounced over the line but the ball came back out to Drewe Broughton who converted. The defender though was quick to stake his claim for what was his first ever Millers goal:
"It was definitely my goal, he said.
"The ball crossed the line and the linesman flagged before it was put in again so I am claiming it."
Fenton was delighted with the display which saw the Millers put out Championship opposition for the third time in this season's Carling Cup competition:
"It was a great performance by the lads, said the former Grimsby player.
"Southampton are a very good Championship side and they play some good football but I thought that we handled them very well. We dominated the game from the first whistle and we looked like the only team that was going to win it."
The Millers are back in League Two action this Saturday when they make the trip to Dagenham and Redbridge and Fenton admitted that he is expected a different type of match:
"The match on Saturday will be a completely different game, he said.
"It is a League Two fixture so we are expecting it to be more of a battle but we will have a little rest then start advanced preparations for that game on Thursday."
