Rotherham United took the derby spoils after a dramatic late winner from Tom Pope secured a 1-0 win over Chesterfield on the Millers' last ever visit to Saltergate.

Pope's constant work rate and endeavour caused Chesterfield problems throughout, and he deservedly capped an outstanding performance with the winning goal in the 90th minute.

The Spireites had the first chance when Dominic Green found fifth gear to outsprint Marc Joseph; he laid the ball to Barry Conlon who took aim with a curling 20-yarder which whistled just past Andy Warrington's far post.

Rotherham hit back on 16 minutes when Pope held the ball up inside the area before laying the ball to the onrushing Nicky Law, but Tommy Lee came to the home side's rescue, sprinting out of goal to block with his legs.

The Millers were given a scare seven minutes later when Warrington started to come for a high ball, slipped on the greasy surface allowing Jack Lester an unexpected sniff at goal, but the veteran marksman skied his shot from eight yards out.

Eight minutes before the interval Rotherham threatened again. Micky Cummins was allowed to run from deep and he slid a through ball into the path of Kevin Ellison but at the crucial moment his composure deserted him and he hammered the ball well over the bar.

Ronnie Moore was forced into a change at the break with Gavin Gunning coming off injured to be replaced by the fit-again Dale Tonge.

On 66 minutes the Millers should have been ahead. With 19 goals already this season you would have put your mortgage on Adam Le Fondre to net when sent clear on goal after a misdirected header by Aaron Downes, but the pint-sized striker hammered the ball straight at the onrushing Lee who blocked with his legs.

At the other end Warrington was called into action when Downes hit a shot on the turn but the Millers' number one tipped over at full stretch.

With the game seemingly heading to a stalemate the Millers launched an attack in the 90th minute. Pablo Mills drilled in a low cross which was brilliantly controlled by Pope who then turned his man and guided the ball beyond Lee and into the bottom corner.
