Rotherham United battled their way to a fantastic 2-1 away victory against high flying Bury at Gigg Lane.

First half goals by Reuben Reid and Drewe Broughton secured the points for the Millers who were forced to weather some strong second half Bury pressure but held out to record their second away win of the campaign.

The Millers quickly got to grips with the tricky weather conditions and opened the scoring after just two minutes. Alex Rhodes played a terrific pass over the top for Reid to run onto and he coolly slotted the ball past Wayne Brown and into the bottom right corner for his sixth goal of the season.

It got better for the Millers when they added a superb second goal after 10 minutes. Micky Cummins produced a pinpoint cross from the right to find Broughton who powered in a bullet header from 18 yards, which found the top right hand corner of the net.

Bury responded to going two down and produced a sustained attack on the Millers goal. In the 19th minute some neat build up play set up an opportunity for full back David Buchanan but his shot from 20 yards was deflected just wide of the far post.

The Shakers spell of pressure was rewarded on the half hour mark when a corner from Michael Jones was headed home at the front post by an unmarked Paul Scott who left Andy Warrington no chance with a firm header from six yards.

Two minutes later and Bury were on the attack again when Elliott Bennett rifled in a shot which was well stopped by Warrington. The Millers found themselves penned in their own half as Bury searched for an equaliser but the Shakers always looked vulnerable to the counter attack which Rotherham almost exploited on the stroke of half time. Reid broke away with the ball from deep and played in Broughton but Brown sprinted out of his net to smoother the ball and block the striker's effort.

Bury 1 v 2 Rotherham United

Rotherham made a positive start to the second half and missed a glorious chance when Reid sprinted clear but blazed over the bar with only Brown to beat. Just before the hour mark former Miller Chris O'Grady was introduced to the fray to perk up a faltering Shakers attack.

The Millers had several second half chances to put the game to bed with Rhodes having an effort saved from 30 yards, and then in the 67th minute the winger was involved again when he found Micky Cummins with a good cross but the Irishman was just off target with his shot.

O'Grady was becoming a real nuisance to the Millers defence and with 10 minutes remaining he was brought down in the area which resulted in a penalty kick. Andy Bishop took the responsibility for the Shakers but his spot kick was brilliantly saved low down by Warrington at full stretch. With six minutes to go Ian Sharps made a wonderful block to deny Bishop and Warrington kept out a Buchanan strike in injury time as the Millers held out for maximum points.
