Mansfield Town 0

Rotherham United 1

Ian Sharp's superbly headed goal early in the second half was enough to see the Millers move into the second round of the Johnstone's paint trophy at Field Mill.

He got on the end of yet another brilliantly delivered Steve Brogan free kick to settle the issue before he had to go off with a hamstring injury.

United made three changes with youngsters Marc Newsham and Ryan Taylor coming into the side as part of a 4-3-3 formation.

A third minute Rotherham corner brought no reward while at the other end a Buxton header did the same following a home flag kick. It was a fairly quiet opening but the Millers had a chance to open the scoring on 13 minutes when Newsham found Dale Tonge who drove his shot wide from a good position.

The Stags replied when Marc Joseph lost possession to allow Hamshaw to go on a run but his cross was cleared. Back came the Millers again with a good cross from Newsham and when Derek Holmes knocked the ball down to Danny Harrison his 20 yards effort was just wide.

Sharps did well to head away a Hamshaw free kick and he moved to the other end to head wide before Holmes hit a fine effort from 20 yards but Muggleton turned his shot round the post.

Tonge shot wide and for the home team Sleath hit a good effort just over the bar but it was the Millers who finished the first half the stronger with Brogan shooting wide following a corner, the keeper was out quick to take the ball from Newsham's feet and Taylor hit a shot into the side netting.

The deadlock was broken three minutes into the second half when Sharps headed his second goal of the season and then he went close again firing wide from another Brogan cross.

Town tried to step up the pace as they looked to get back on level terms and McAliskey had his hooked shot blocked for a corner from which he headed just over the bar.

Buxton headed wide and it needed a good tackle from Brogan to concede a corner before the Millers had a great chance to add a second goal when Marcus Bean was sent clear but he squandered the opportunity by firing wide with only the keeper to beat.

Newsham had a good opening on 74 minutes but put his shot too high while Andy Warrington did well to block a shot from Martin as the home team battled for an equaliser.

He then saved from Reet but once again the Millers had a chance to snatch a second goal when substitute Sam Duncum raced away only to be robbed in the penalty area before he could get a shot in.

In a desperate late gasp effort the home team won another corner and Arnold shot just over the bar but the Millers' solid defending held them in good stead as the moved into the second round.
