Rotherham United Ladies raised their game in midweek to overcome a confident Radcliffe who sat third in the Midlands Combination League, after four goals from Helen Lynskey saw all three points for the home team.
Rotherham started much the stronger with early shots by Lynskey and Sarah Thickitt and the deadlock was broken when the home side was awarded a free kick for a foul on Kerry Longstone midway through Radcliffe half. A perfectly delivered free kick by in form Amy Pollock saw Lynskey get on the score sheet for the Millers with a perfectly placed header on 20 minutes.
Radcliffe raised their game and came back at the Millers which saw 'keeper Charlie Whitley pull off two outstanding saves to keep the home side in front. Then after some great battling from the versatile Longstone resulted in a through ball to put Lynskey in for her second just before half time.
Radcliffe half time team talk saw the away side come out determined to make amends for their first half failings. Longstone conceded a free kick on the edge of the Millers box and the kick beat the Millers 'keeper to put them firmly back in the game two minutes after the restart.
Radcliffe continued the early pressure making the Millers defence concede a number of fouls in dangerous positions. The visitors then levelled within five minutes to leave the Millers wondering what had gone wrong.
The home side regained their confidence and began to put pressure on the Radcliffe goal. Good work from Hayley Wood and Sarah Saxon gave Lynskey with the opportunity to retake the lead for the home side. Lynskey made no mistake and rounded the 'keeper to score a tremendous third on 73 minutes.
Lynskey then rounded off a perfect four on 83 minutes to see out the game 4 - 2 winners.
FA Women's Cup - First Round
Due to a waterlogged pitch the previous Sunday, Rotherham had to travel to Tranmere to complete their first round tie on Sunday 15th November. Although the Millers were under strength following injuries against Radcliffe they were able to continue their good form by beating the Northern Combinations side with resounding 6 of the best.
S Wood settled early nerves for the Millers putting them in front after 10 minutes and she scored the Millers second after 23 minutes. Kerry Longstone scored after 18 minutes to sandwich Woods' goals and then further strikes from Rachel Rutherford gave the Millers a half time lead of 4 - 1. A bad injury to Longstone saw the Millers depleted further although this did not deter the Ladies who went onto score a further two goals from Hale and C Wood.
This excellent result gives them a place in the second round against Liverpool Feds from the Northern Combination League The tie will take place on 29th November 1pm kick off at Parkgate
Sunday 22nd November RULFC play Leafield LFC at home (Parkgate) 2pm kick-off.
