It was an unlikely source that opened the scoring for Rotherham United last night in their 2-0 victory over Blackburn Rovers, as Kari Arnason fired home 69 games after his last goal.

The Icelandic defender has been a standout performer for the Millers this season but it’s in his own 18 yard box where he’s stood out, not often threatening the opposition defence.

“I think it’s about two years since my last goal so it’s about time,” Arnason said immediately after the game.

“It’s not your job to score (as a defender) but I’d like to get more. I’ve come close but I’m not very good at finishing so I’ve proved myself wrong tonight. It was a Kieran Agard special and good to see it hit the net. I took it early on my left foot rather than move it onto my right and got a bit lucky but nonetheless I scored.”

Steve Evans’s side put in a dominating performance under the floodlights at New York Stadium and after going down to two early goals at Ipswich on Saturday, Arnason has praised the nature in which they started the game.

“I thought overall we deserved to win the game and in the first-half I thought we created far more chances and I thought that first 45 was key to winning the game. They put three in the middle and the boy in the hole was getting on the ball so me and Morgs squeezed the line up and they started going longer and it suited us.”

It was only Rotherham United’s second league win at home, but the former Plymouth Argyle and Aberdeen man believes that with the experience the players have of the level and the more they work together, the more they’re growing into the second tier.

Most of us have played in the Championship before and as a team we’ve had to change because we used to go out all guns blazing and the other teams couldn’t handle it. It’s not like that in this league, three passes and they’re out so you have to be a bit cleverer and learn when to step up and when to let them have the ball and in that sense we’re growing as a team.
