Rotherham United Community Sports Trust has joined forces with South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw’s AAA Screening Programme to host a new pilot health screening clinic, in a bid to protect its older male fans from Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm’s (AAAs).

An AAA is a swelling of the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, which weakens and expands. There are no symptoms and if left untreated the swelling can lead to a rupture and a serious risk of death from internal bleeding.
The first of the three pilot AAA screening clinics kicks off on home turf at the New York Stadium on 29 January 2015.

The Millers are urging all their over 65s male fans to get in touch with the AAA Screening Team and book an appointment for the clinics.

Helen McAlinney, AAA Screening Programme Coordinator for South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, said: “It’s great that Rotherham United Community Sports Trust is supporting the NHS AAA screening programme.  AAAs kill around 3,000 people a year, mainly older men aged 65 and over. Having a simple five minute ultrasound scan of the abdomen can save lives and you get the results straight away.”

Head of Community for Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Jamie Noble, said: “Promoting the AAA Screening Programme to our fans is something we are totally passionate about in order to keep them healthy. I am aware that AAA’s can have no signs or symptoms so it’s paramount that men aged 65 and over have the screening – it can be a life saver.”

Since 2013 Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been commissioned to provide the NHS AAA Screening Programme across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw.

Men in their 65th year are invited for screening by letter, but men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme on 01709 321189 or by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa@nhs.net.
