Steve Evans post Wigan Athletic...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans hailed the performance of his team after they recorded a richly deserved 2-1 success against Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

The Millers lead through Tom Lawrence’s first ever Rotherham United goal but were pegged back by a Ben Watson header only for Alex Revell to score the winner a minute later to seal the points for Evans’ men.

“It was another super performance,” said the Millers boss after the game.

“We were disappointed that we were only 1-0 in front at half-time, in fairness to Wigan they had a five-six minute spell at the start of the game when they had a real go on what was a difficult pitch to play on.

“We got the ball down and we passed it and when the second half started we were having a really good period in the game, but they equalised from a set play which was disappointing. We then went and won the game from a set play through the header from Alex (Revell) and they will be as disappointed at conceding that goal as I was about their equaliser.

“We have given some young players the freedom to go and play and they are showing great desire, when they equalised it didn’t affect them. They have been a credit to themselves as have the players who have been with us in League One and Two who were again outstanding. I have to praise my captain Craig Morgan and Kari Arnason who put their head on a lot of things in that last six minutes of additional time.”

The result now moves the Millers seven points clear of today’s opponents ahead of the busy Christmas period.

“It was a big football match today, we didn’t hide away from that,” he added.

“If there is a criticism you look back on the games against Cardiff, Forest and Blackpool and if you add six points which we deserved then we would be mid-table and looking up at the play-off pack.

“We won’t get carried away but it is an absolute pleasure to stand on the sideline watching these performances.”
