The Millers are defeated in the Final Third Development Cup...

Rotherham United Reserves were beaten 2-0 at home in the Final Third Development Cup fixture against Notts County at Roundwood.

A double in the second half from striker Ronan Murray was enough for the Magpies in a close encounter at the Millers’ training headquarters.

Rotherham, who were watched by caretaker manager Nicky Eaden, included the likes of Farrend Rawson, Shay Facey and Danny Collins as the Millers looked to get minutes into a number of first team players.

Goalkeeper Alex Cairns was called into action early on when he made a flying save to deny County’s Graham Burke.

At the other end former Rotherham stopper Scott Loach palmed Emmanuel Ledesma’s effort into the path of Collins, but a late challenge denied the centre half what looked like a certain goal.

Just before the half hour mark Murray drove forward before smashing an effort over the bar as County threatened again.

On 32 minutes a teasing cross from Ledesma just evaded Rawson at the back post, before Ledesma himself went close after latching onto a pass from Greg Halford, but the winger fired wide.

The Millers had Rawson to thank for keeping the scores level when his sliding intervention denied County after Cairns was beaten.

Just before the hour mark Tom Thorpe’s header was comfortably held following a Ledesma corner.

After 75 minutes of stalemate the visitors took the lead. A corner was flicked towards goal by Murray who beat Cairns at the near post with a tidy finish.

It was the same player who sealed the victory for County 10 minutes from time when his looping header beat Cairns to give the visitors a late win.
