The Millers sign the Leicester City youngster...

Rotherham United have signed Tom Lawrence on a youth loan from Leicester City, subject to Premier League and Football League ratification.

The 20-year-old joined up with fellow new signing Reece James at club training headquarters at Roundwood this morning to meet his new team mates for the first time.

Lawrence has signed a deal until January on a busy week of transfer activity at The AESSEAL New York Stadium, ahead of the weekend fixture with Blackpool.

“Tom Lawrence is a young man that I first watched at Manchester United where he has been since he was a kid,” boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk

“I watched him develop at Manchester United Reserves and also during a loan spell at Yeovil Town, and he was a stunning performer in a side that was fighting for survival in The Championship.

“Leicester City under Nigel Pearson have a reputation for buying young and exciting talent so it was no surprise to see him join Leicester during the summer.

“We have continued to track his progress at Leicester which included watching Tom during closed door games and under 21 matches and he has been stunning.

“I first approached Nigel about taking him a couple of months ago but at that time they didn’t want to let him leave, but we asked again a fortnight ago and was delighted to get a deal on the table where we could take him on emergency loan.”

Lawrence came through the famed Academy setup at Old Trafford before making his debut for the club in the Premier League fixture against Hull City at the back end of last season.

The Welshman has Football League experience following loan moves to Carlisle United in 2013 and Yeovil Town in 2014. He has played for Wales from under 17 to under 21 level and was named in the senior squad for a friendly with Holland in 2014.

In the summer he signed a four-year deal with Leicester City for an undisclosed fee.
