Steve Evans post FSV Mainz...

Rotherham United manager Steve Evans again praised his side after another valuable workout in a 2-1 victory over Bundesliga outfit FSV Mainz 05.

With the new Sky Bet Championship season just a week way, Evans watched his side notch a notable victory after goals from Matt Derbyshire and Jordan Bowery secured the win after Leon Balogun had put the German side in front.

After the game Evans praised his side for the discipline and organisation in the first half and for their offensive prowess in the second 45.

“It was very much like Tuesday night where we gave a first half performance which was disciplined and more about the shape rather than offensive play,” Evans remarked.

“I think in the second half we had more offensive play, and we have looked at the results of the Bundesliga clubs over here, and we have teams winning at Newcastle and Stoke. We have beaten a team that is packed full with stars, so we had to work really hard, have a good shape and discipline about our performance and I think we did.

“There are lots of things to work on, the team that started won’t be the team for MK Dons, but there were a lot of plusses today and we got some more valuable minutes into them.”

Evans confirmed that some members of his squad will be involved in a behind closed doors training ground match at Sunderland on Tuesday, before preparations for the season curtain raiser with MK Dons are concluded.

“We will go up to Sunderland on Tuesday for a behind closed door game, and we will get minutes into those who need them,” Evans added.

“Some have already ticked that box so they will have a different training programme on Tuesday with the coaching staff. We then need to pick a team the best we can that can beat MK Dons on Saturday. That will be tough as they are a team that are experiencing Championship football for the first time, and it is a club that I respect wholly with good players.”
