Academy manager Garreth Barker hailed the progress made by defensive duo Tom Rose and Fabian Bailey after both were handed professional deals with the club.

The youngsters have both penned one-year deals to stay with the Millers after impressing the club’s Academy staff with their consistent progression.

Bailey, a right-back by trade, can also play further forward, whilst Rose is a versatile left-side defender.

Barker is excited about the duo’s future, and they join fellow Academy prospects Kuda Muskwe and Darnelle Bailey-King who have also signed professional forms.

“The boys have done really well and they deserved this exciting opportunity,” Barker said.

“This is reward for their commitment and attitude throughout their time here, but of course the hard work is just beginning.

“Tom has played consistently well this year and he has played a lot of games.

“We’ve played him at left back and centre half. He’s got some really good physical attributes and he’s left-sided.

“Those that have seen him play will know he’s a very comfortable footballer and has developed considerably in the last seven or eight months.

“Fab’s story is a little bit different because he’s been here since he was an Under 13.

“He was formerly with Leeds United before coming here and he is one of those players that you’d love to have half a dozen of. He’s been at the football club since he’s 12 and he takes real pride in what he does.”

The news has capped a positive turn of the year for the Academy, who have slowly climbed the Youth Alliance table with some notable victories over the likes of York City, Mansfield Town and Notts County.
