Rotherham United’s Steward of the Year for the 2014/15 season has been announced as Ian Thomas after he was nominated and voted for by colleagues and supporters here at AESSEAL New York Stadium.

The Steward of the Year award recognises the contribution of the staff that attend each game at the Millers’ home to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy their afternoon in a safe environment.

Ian, who is usually posted at the back of the Eric Twigg Pukka Pies West Stand, was thrilled to pick up the accolade which was run by the Millers for the first time this year.

“I’m very pleased and it’s nice that people appreciate what I do and have taken the time to get in touch with the club to put my name forward,” he beamed.

Approaching his third decade as a steward with the Millers, Ian reflected on his time so far with the club he has followed to various grounds both as a steward and supporter.

“I’ve just finished my 26th season as a steward with the Millers. I started off at Millmoor and then went to Don Valley before we ended up at the current ground which is great.”

“I saw the advertisement in the local paper and I thought I could combine my love for the Millers with my work.
 
“I’ve had a lot of memorable days in my time here but Alan Lee’s goal to send us up has to come top of the list. There are certainly a few but that has to be the best.”

Having witnessed the Millers’ meteoric rise to the Sky Bet Championship both under Ronnie Moore and then Steve Evans, Rotherham United’s Steward of the Year is hopeful that another term of second tier football will keep the crowds coming to AESSEAL New York Stadium:

“I’m hoping that by staying in this division we can keep the big crowds coming in and maybe get a few more full houses.

“The feeling of relief after the Reading game when we ensured our safety was my highlight this season. When the second goal went in I think we all knew the job was done.”

Ian finished by stating that his love for both the club and his work will see him continue as a Rotherham United steward for many years to come:

“While ever I’ve got the supporters here I’ll carry on, I love my job. As is often said about footballers they get paid to do what they love and it’s the same for me.”
