Richie Smallwood has signed on emergency loan...

Rotherham United have signed Richie Smallwood on an emergency loan from Middlesbrough to cover for injuries in midfield, subject to Football League ratification.

The midfielder enjoyed a highly-successful loan spell last season at New York Stadium where he starred for the Millers as the club earned promotion to The Championship, scoring the decisive penalty against Leyton Orient in the play-off final.

The 23-year-old’s arrival in January last season helped spearhead the Millers run to Wembley, with Smallwood only on the losing side twice in his 18 appearances for the club.

“With the absence of Rob Milsom we needed some cover with some important matches coming up. I have always spoken about my admiration of Richie as a player, and there’s no Millers supporter who would not think that he played a massive part in our promotion from League One last season including a Man of the Match performance at Wembley,” boss Steve Evans told www.themillers.co.uk

“I have made it clear to my Chairman that if it is at all possible, I would like this to become a permanent signing, and he has assured me he’ll do everything in his power to make that happen.”

The player and his representatives are making their way to New York Stadium and it’s a matter of time to see if he can be registered by tonight.
