Rotherham United assistant manager Paul Raynor admitted he was ‘bitterly disappointed’ after the Millers were undone twice late on in a 3-2 defeat at Bolton.
After being in charge for much of the game through an Anthony Wordsworth free-kick, two goals from Joe Mason put the Trotters in the ascendancy. Then Jordan Bowery levelled late on only for Mason to bag a third to peg the Millers back once again.
After the game Raynor admitted his frustration at heading back to South Yorkshire with no points.
“I am bitterly disappointed to be honest,” he said.
“We got ourselves back in the game twice, we scored two goals away from home using a bit more of an adventurous formation because we felt that Bolton were possibly there for the taking and we were proved right.
“But we conceded three sloppy goals and we cannot defend like that, not at the level we are playing at, we’ve got punished so that is really disappointing.
“We have got punished tonight for slack defending, all the goals were avoidable and we have prided ourselves on our defensive qualities this season, if anything it was the other end where we needed improving, so that was the disappointment to be honest.
Raynor did admit that there were many positives from the game, citing the Millers improvement in front of goal as major plus.
“We have created more chances tonight away from home than we have all season,” he added.
“That was a good positive. I thought that we played with a good tempo, in the first period we looked solid defensively and we got ourselves in front.”
