Case Study on Keaton Rowley

Meet Keaton Rowley

Keaton started working with us as a member of the Dalton IYSS sports group that delivered weekly sports sessions, as a progression Keaton was signposted along with several members of the group to the United 4 Communities FC u16’s team that provided competitive football in the Sheffield and District Junior Football League. This combined with regular attendance at evening sports provision greatly increased the amount of physical activity taken part in by Keaton and also provided a positive social  outlet with a chance to meet other young people from across Rotherham who represent United 4 Communities

As our contact time increased Keaton was also selected to take part in a placement by St Mary’s PRU. The placement involved a Sports Leaders Course which involved learning about the basic requirements needed to be a sports coach.

As a reward during Rotherham United’s annual Kick it Out fixture versus Leeds Keaton was selected to hold the Kick it Out banner as the two teams entered the pitch. The fixture was also broadcast live on Sky Sports and in front of a capacity 12000 spectators. The opportunity not only supports a national recognized equality campaign but gives the opportunity for young people to experience something unique with a match day experience.

Towards the end of the United 4 Communities season Keaton’s dad Mark started to volunteer to support the team travelling to away games and providing an assistant on the touchline at home games. This was invaluable to the team. Mark and Keaton’s brother have now both competed in both the United 4 Communities adults team and the Inclusion 5 and 11 aside teams that help to support and promote positive mental health amongst adult men.

Nathan Carlin, Cohesion Lead Coach commented: “Keaton has been brilliant for us throughout the project firstly as a participant and then later as a U4C star player, he never missed a single session let alone a fixture and has continued to be enthusiastic throughout. It has been nice to see other members of his family get involved in our projects and we hope this continues over the coming months.”
