This weekend we welcome relegation threatened Millwall to the AESSEAL New York Stadium. The Lions currently sit in the relegation zone and with just 13 games to go and need to start picking up victories to avoid dropping into League One. Here we take a closer look at this weekend’s opponents.
Recent Form
Millwall’s form in recent weeks is not something to keep Lions fans smiling. The south Londoners have won just two matches in their last 12 league outings, both coming away from home at Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest. Home form continues to be a major issue for the Lions, with their last league victory at the Den coming in October. Millwall have not won any of their last three matches and were beaten comfortably in midweek, losing 3-1 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
Key Players
He may not have scored the goals that most Millwall fans would have liked since joining from Halifax Town, but Lee Gregory is still someone most will appreciate. The striker never stops working for the team and despite only scoring 4 league goals this season he constantly chases lost balls and makes sure he comes off the pitch knowing he gave everything for the team.
Sid Nelson is a player that has come through the ranks and has looked very accomplished since breaking into the first team. He may not play every week for the Lions but when he has his performances have been assured and he plays above his years. He will certainly be a player Millwall will look to build their team around in the coming years.
The Manager
Ian Holloway is one of the biggest personalities in the game. He has enjoyed lots of success in the Championship in recent years after guiding both Blackpool and Crystal Palace to the Premier League via the play-offs. However it has certainly been a different challenge at Millwall as it has been all about survival.
Having joined in January 2014, Millwall were in desperate need of inspiration to help stay in the Championship. After an up and down start, Holloway eventually led the Lions to safety after going unbeaten in their last eight games. Most would have expected Millwall to kick on from this, however Holloway has struggled to keep Millwall away from the drop zone this season. With teams above Millwall picking up points, including the Millers, Holloway will need to work his magic if he is to keep the Lions in the Championship.
Previous Meetings
The Millers came away with all three points from the Den when the two teams met earlier this season. After a 50/50 first half it was Ben Pringle who scored the winning goal on the 49th minute to give Rotherham a 1-0 victory and inflict a first defeat of the season on Millwall. However it is Millwall who narrowly lead the head to head between the two clubs, having won 13 of their meetings to Rotherham’s 11, with the teams having drawn on 9 occasions.
